it shaking. >> they caught a nearly imperceptible shaking at precisely the time the earthquake hit. >> this is a $140,000 mercedes. >> ouch. you are glad there wasn't more than that. >> nothing here. >> the boss may have been worried about the car but that was the last thing on the mind of this salesman and his wife. >> i said what's shaking the house like that. >> reporter: the couple was worried all the shaking is from someone trying to break in their back door. >> jumped up and looked for his gun. >> if i had it i would have run downstairs with it. >> reporter: surae chinn at the u.s. geological survey headquarters in reston, virginia where scientists are researching the earthquake and its aftershocks. here's what they say happened this morning. they say the fault line is at an angle and say there was no much intense pressure against each other forcing the rocks to slip an inch or two, causing the tremor. an aftershock was already felt and they say there could be more on the way.

>> there's even a slights possibility there will be an earthquake that is bigger than the first one. >> scientist mace never know which fault line caused the quake because the slip never surfaced since the quake happened three miles below ground. scientists say tremors were felt as fought away as 100 to 150-miles from germantown and although we don't live on a major fault line, nearby states such as new york and tennessee do. >> lose no place on the east coast that is truly safe. i'm in aspen hill where after the quake shook a wall came tumbling down. >> it sounded like a low-flying plane that was coming in. >> surprising it was enough to take the wall down. >> yeah. i thought maybe a house had blown up from a gas leak or something like that and when i came out my neighbor, ray, was on the porch with a flash light looking around. he thought his wall had fallen and that is what caused the rumbling and all of that. and i told him, i said it

couldn't have been because, you know, our house was shaking and rattling like crazy and it sounds like a earthquake. >> in fact, confusion was the word in the moments that followed the tremor. >> montgomery county 911. what's the emergency? >> yeah, did we just have an earthquake? >> we don't know, sir, bubo there was a county wide thing so we are looking in to it. >> there wasn't an explosion or anything? >> we don't believe so. >> didn't sound like an explosion. it sounded -- i work for fema and have been through a earthquake before and i think it might have been a earthquake. >> montgomery county 911. what's the emergency? >> well, i just experienced what i thought was a earthquake tremor or something. my house shook. >> we -- we felt it too. do you need the police or fire rescue or anything? >> no. i just -- i, i, i don't know, i didn't know what else to do. >> this is not the first time we have had a quake in our

area. in fact our region has felt tremors of 2.5 magnitude six times since 1974. today's was the largest in the city since the usgs started to keep such records. more recently a 1.38 magnitude quake hit in annandale in 2008 and in 2003 a 3.9 quake centered between rich monday and charlottesville and could be felt here and a series of quakes centered near columbia, maryland in 1993, reaching a magnitude of 2.7. preparing for a earthquake is a matter of stocking up on emergency supplies maybe a first aid kit, fire extinguisher and canned goods and water. folks at dc homeland security and emergency management agency say they have been fielding calls all day from folks concerned and looking for advice on how to prepare and what to do in case there is another earthquake. >> don't than the doorway because the door could swing. the hinges could give. the door could swing on to

hands and fingers and cause problems. so a safer bet is to be in a room without windows or doors, like a bathroom to make sure you are ducking and taking cover. >> experts suggest securing heavy furniture to the wall and always place the heaviest items close toast the floor. the quake is the hot topic at wusa 9's facebook page today. one post --

at wusa9.com. of course, we have our comments about what happened and we have some surveillance video of exactly what things were looking like around town when the quake hit. that's all at wusa9.com. meantime, let's get to topper for a look at the science involved in the capital quake. top? >> a couple of things. they are not publicized but we have a lot of fault lines in the east. in fact there were earthquakes from missouri to tennessee to north and south carolina. we will go back and center on where our earthquakes are. there was actually two. the main earthquake is the first one. 50 a 5 this morning. and i will tell you if it had shaken a little longer i would have taken precautions because it was crazy loud. that's another comment people have been saying. apparently the sound dissipates differently in the east when you have plate tectonics moving than in the west and may make a soundwave. another one near barnesville at 5:16 that measured 2.0. let's go to the computers and

talk about the scale, the richter scale. we will try to put it in perspective. today's quake was 3.6. in 2003 we had a 4.5 west of richmond. haiti's quake was 7.0 in january. it was one thousand times stronger than the quake we felt in montgomery county today. we will come back and talk about rumbling of a different sort in a bit. crews spent this rest of the day inspecting bridges after the quake to make sure there was no damage. we checked with them a few hours ago and they said the roads and bridges have been inspected by now and they didn't find any problems. that's good news because patranya bhoolsuwan has the traffic and the rush hour home at 7:00. has been it been clearing up? >> i wish i had good news for folks traveling on 95 or about to jump on to it. looks like getaway friday for sure. from fairfax county parkway to quantico it has been heavy all day long. still an hour commute for folks

out there on i-95 in virginia. moving to i-495. right now the slowest stretch from 270 spur to the toll road will be about a 15 minute drive there. no accidents or incidents just a lot of volume. and finally we will fly over the toll road past tysons corner, through hunter mill to the airport. if you are heading that way to catch a flight no problems for you. 95 to bwi no problems either. derek, back to you. some folks were easing their worries that they may have had after the quake with a nice cold drink and we heard of at least two local restaurants offering drink specials this afternoon inspired by the quake. at the west end bistro you can get an after shock cocktail. it is made from tequila, pineapple juice and jalapeno. and bgr offered half price shakes all morning long. >> i thought it was a

next stop, mars. that was the theme of mar's day at the national air and space museum today. families explored the mysteries of the red planet and learned about the current and future mars missions from nasa. and mars day comes as nasa learns it may get one more mission out of the space shuttle fleet. the senate commerce science and transportation committee approved a three-year spending plan for nasa that postpones shelfing the fleet. the final shuttle flight is scheduled for february of next year. the plan includes one more flight to the international space station in the summer or fall of 2011. the space station is on the verge of it rowe gets a boost tonight. a team of scientists in the netherlands is doing final testing on an alpha magnetic spectrometer to add to the outpost. it is designed to help

travel in time. it is not made of sand, sticks or straw, but some residents are ready to huff and puff to stop a develop they want to tear down a house in woodly park and replace it with two houses neighbors say are just too big. as alex trevino shows us the community is ready to fight the mansions. >> what we are trying to do is keep the wood in woodly park. >> gwynne is hundreds from this secluded section of woodly park fighting to maintain the character of the neighborhood before it changes shape. >> the house will be gone. that's gone and there will be two houses, one here at the corner and one just a few feet up the hill. >> reporter: john goodman the former president of the woodly park community association is one of the plaintiffs who filed a lawsuit and put up signs protesting plans to split the lot and build two huge homes here. >> these large houses on smaller lots is out of character.

stick out like a sore thumb. >> reporter: the other problem, the area is zoned for 5,000 square foot lots but the city i can gave the developer the green light even though one of the houses fell short of the required square footage. >> the city granted a deviation but did if so without notifying the community which we feel are strong. >> reporter: while neighbors are trying to top them from tearing down this house and knocking down the trees to build and they say code is code a sour far the developer is in compliance it. >> is unattractive. >> while they may eliminate tree cover and anger neighbors, property values could rise. in northwest, alex trevino, 9 news now. >> that neighborhood is now waiting for an appeal to be heard on october 5th. concerns tonight about that new cap on the oil well in the gulf of mexico. the retired admiral allen says so far the pressure readings

they are seeing since the bows on the cap were closed have been less than ideal and it has engineers worried there is another leak they haven't been able to find yet. so far there are no signs the capped well is leaking. and a fear comes from a new film called gas land. a documentary shows frightening images of tap water lit on fire because of seeping gas. it is a story that starts when film maker josh fox gets an offer for mineral rights on his land in a shale basin in pennsylvania. >> the money part of this is preying on people in such a way they are forced in to a dilemma where they don't want to consider the environmental problems and the money that is weighing on one side is persuasive. >> reporter: josh fox defends his controversial film on sunday morning at 8:00. platts energy week here on wusa

9. what not to do in a flood? heavy rains caused flash flooding in northern kentucky and this man's car got started in the rushing water and he tried to walk up the hill to a friend's house and that's when he lost his footing and was swept away. >> the current was too strong and took him down. >> actually swept him off of his feet and carried him down to the bottom of the hill. he was beat up pretty bad. >> fortunately the fella survived being swept away but had bruises. it filled basements in the area and destroyed sidewalks and buckled the roads. >> you know, here's the deal. it was actually a good video of what not do. wasn't very deep, up to his kneecaps and it took him out. if he falls and go down the street and hit his head on the sidewalk and curb. >> that could be it. >> yeah, that could be it. looking a few thunderstorms. >> not even much rain. 98 today. the forecasts for the next
